Frequent Causes for Concern

Low Water Pressure: If you have low water pressure, it can be caused by a variety of problems.  It can be as simple as a bad pressure switch, which tells the well when to turn on and off.  Or, it could be that the well has a leak somewhere and the water your well is trying to get to your faucet is getting diverted off somewhere.  It often takes a trained professional to troubleshoot the correct reason there’s a lack of pressure.  On the flip side, it could be that the well is operating normally, and there’s an issue with the plumbing in the house.  We often see it where people think their well is bad because of a lack of water pressure, but really its a plugged up water filter.

Well Makes Loud Noises: If your well makes loud noises, it’s often an indication that the well pump is nearing the end of its useful life.  Often there are signs such as noise that indicate a failure in the future, but we’re too busy to notice until it’s too late.  If you think your well is unusually noisy, you might want to get it looked at before you’re unpleasantly surprised with no water at your tap!

Well Turns On A Lot: If you’re well seems to turn on frequently it could be that you have a bad pressure tank!  Pressure tanks are installed to help keep water pressure consistent, but also to reduce the frequency the well has to turn on. The idea is, you don’t want your well turning on every time you wash your hands or flush the toilet.  Unfortunately, if the pressure tank has a failure, it can result in the well short cycling.  However, it could also be a leak somewhere in the piping forcing the pump to turn on frequently to try to keep the pressure where you want it.

I Hear Water Flowing At The Well Outside: If you hear water flowing in the well outside, its usually a pretty good indication that the drop pipe going to the well pump has a leak.  Overtime a lot of these old metal pipes begin to rust through and leak which can make your well sound like a distant waterfall. This will ultimately result in reduced water pressure, and premature well pump failure.

My Well Never Shuts Off and My Electric Bills Are High!: This is often due to a leak in the piping that results in the pump running constantly and racking up kilowatt hours on your electrical bill.  If your electric bill seems consistently high, your well might never shut off.
